Free Download: Gotye feat. Kimbra “Somebody That I Used To Know (Owsey Remix)”

Belgian born-Australian raised Wouter De Backer aka Goyte has been garnering prominence of late with his track “Somebody I Used To Know” taken from his third studio album Making Mirrors.

His song, reminiscing on a past love, is the longest running no.1 song in Australia, since Savage Garden’s “Truly Madly Deeply” (remember that song?), staying 8 weeks at pole position.

Accompanied by New Zealand singer-songwriter Kimbra, the track also made its way to no.26 on Billboard Hot 100 Charts, Gossip Girl, 90210, Jimmy Kimmel’s Show and played as an unofficial anthem around festival grounds at last year’s Splendour In The Grass.

Irish DJ-producer Owsey lends his ambient and chillout remixing prowess on this track, ridding pop ditties and extrapolating on the haunting elements, particularly on Goyte and Kimbra’s vocals. The enigmatic producer has a portfolio of acclaimed remixes with the likes of Above & Beyond, Ellie Goulding and Johan Reinhold.

Download Goyte feat. Kimbra “Somebody I Used To Know (Owsey Remix) from his Facebook Page or Mediafire.

The remix is also featured in Volmax’s VI mix.

News: Ming’s Bassic Grows Strong; Zouk Launching Two New Nights

Image: Afiq Omar

When Zouk launched Bassic in early January, I was fuck-yeah-ing all night long. Helmed by resident DJ Ming and given added weight with Jeremy Boon, the night features all sorts of bass from dubstep to drum & bass. And because it’s neither on the commercial end nor Skrillex side of things, the opening night (which featured Kiat) saw a healthy turnout. The second outing (with Darren Dubwise) was a glorious affair, attracting bass-addicts populating the front and “cutting air” with their hands until there was no more air to cut. Come Mar 10, the night that has already garnered a strong following returns with DJ KoFlow supporting.

March will also see two brand new nights happening at Zouk. Be will take place quarterly featuring bangers and floor-fillers (think Alesso, Arty and Norman Doray) dropped by FORMATIVE, resident djB’s newest moniker. On top of that, he will also select his favourite musicians to add on to the “live” elements. On Mar 30, eccentric percussionist Shovell together with up-and-coming local DJ Chris B. will be dishing the launch of the night with Be Percussive.

A day after the launch of Be, another new night will be launched with Family & Friends -an evening of like-minded individuals showcasing their deck prowess. Mar 31 will see Portuguese DJ Carlos Fauvrelle playing alongside FFF Girl DJ Bootcamp principle founder Debbie Chia together with versatile DJ Kavan.

News: Will Butter Factory’s Ace of Spades Draw A Full House?

AOS - The Official Launch Party
Red Dot Museum l $20/25 includes two drinks
Feb 25, 9pm

Winner of the Singapore Experience Awards 2011 for “Best Nightspot Experience”, The Butter Factory will be leaving their One Fullerton compound for a one-night stay at Red Dot Museum. Launching their new DJ outfit Ace of Spades (AOS) out of their humble establishment, will the gamble pay off?

Made up of Butter’s residents Andrew T, Dave Does and Stanley, the trio will be dishing their staple array of bass-heavy electro, mash-ups, hip hop and R&B. The move to play beyond the club’s dancefloor is unheard of, especially since the intent is to launch a new name for familiar faces. In what could be a move to attract newer patrons to the already youth-centric club, dropping the brand at fresh grounds could play to the club’s advantage.

Added to the line-up for the launch, a regional group of MCs including Bangkok Invader’s Dandee from Thailand and Hong Kong’s GoldMoutain will support.

Mix: Volmax’s IV

Image: Jenny Harmsen

It would have been right to set you on fire.
Whatever that’s left of you.
To extinguish your liquid lies,
your hardened cries.
The artificial true colours stains your tongue.
How much pain can you take,
before you give?
How many times do you need to die,
before you live?
To love, again.

Interview: SBTRKT

Like unassuming drops from a drizzle, Aaron Jerome’s SBTRKT tidal wave rise in 2011 ensued from his seminal singles and remixes leading to an eponymous album that has been highly praised by artists and the media alike. There’s no other way to put a specific genre tag on his tracks other than knowing that it is a SBTRKT piece. Emotive, minimal and marrying pop sensibilities with distinctively melodic flavours, the sound of the masked crusader has been a much needed breakthrough from electronic music’s years of stagnancy.

I spoke to SBTRKT after his first ever South East Asian gig at Home Club, Singapore where he reveals the ingenuity behind the mask, the division between artist and body, Deadmau5’s brand and Thom Yorke’s interactiveness.

Mix: Volmax’s III

Image: ST. KRYPTONIA by Hillary White

Indie super-band The Dead Weather opens for the hip-hop and R&B half of the eclectic Volmax III -following in the same vein as the last two mixes: never pigeon-holed. With current urban lyrical and production purveyors Shabazz Palaces, SBTRKT and Das Racist helming the front, the lesser-known Khat who has been compared to The Weeknd are both featured.

Nicholas Jarr remix of a Azari & III track takes us to the house portion of the mix while quickly introducing a gem of a remix from Sandy Rivera. The acapella of Pigeon John’s “The Bomb” threads through the electro mayhem from Hacker Boys and Mark Sherry’s latest while new remixes of Avicii and Justice and Cobra Starship peaks it up.

With the latter hinting elements of dubstep, the mix heads to its tail-end with wobbles and heavy bass hitters from the likes of Zeds Dead, Gemini, Sub Focus, Noisia and Joker. I’m a big fan of the vocal prowess of Alex Clare and he did a fantastic cover of Prince’s “When Doves Cry” which features. Zane Lowe’s alter-ego Whateverman closes the mix with his rework of a Snow Patrol favourite.

Download the mix and I wouldn’t worry if you start head-bobbing; that’s really the whole point. Thank you for listening.

Tracklist:

1) The Dead Weather “So Far from Your Weapon”
2) Shabazz Palaces “yeah you”
3) Sinjin Hawke and Lucid “Fizzy Drink”
4) Das Racist “Happy Rappy”

8) Stateless feat. Amenta “Blue Fire”
9) Khat “Mumbles”
10) The Weeknd “Thursday”
11) Zomby “Riding With Death”
12) Azari & III “Into The Night (Nicolas Jaar Remix)”
13) Will & The People “Knocking (Sandy Rivera’s Club Mix)”
14) Pigeon John “The Bomb (Acapella)”
15) Hacker Boys “Amheba (DJ Kharma & Mighty Atom Remix)”
16) Mark Sherry “Sangre Caliente (Organ Donors Remix)”
17) Avicii “Levels (FTampa Remix)”

Mix: Volmax’s II

Image: The Farewell of Telemachus and Eucharis by Jacques-Louis David (c. 1818)

Here’s Volmax II which I wanted to release in February but grew too impatient. First on the mix is EMIKA -one of the most underrated artist if I ever heard one. The UK born-Berlin based singer/DJ/producer of Czech heritage is one of Ninja Tune’s most recent signing. A storyteller first, her distinctive creative knack can be found in her broody narrative further exposed by dark basslines and even darker undertones. I love her music very much.

Immediately after, Lana Del Rey (of course), Yasmin and an up-and-comer Holly Prothman fills the female vocal range. A couple of Jamie (S)Woons is followed by three UNKLE tracks that goes from the haunting to the rocking -thanks to Noel Gallagher. Brandon Boyd’s solo endeavour is also featured leading to some crazy dubstep wobbles from Nero and Dodge & Fuski.

Free to download, enjoy 54 minutes of 15 tracks including a monologue from the film Spun right at the end. Thanks for listening in advance.

Tracklist:

1) EMIKA “Double Edge”
2) Lana Del Rey “Blue Jeans (Count Ninjula Remix)”
3) XXXY “Kerpow”
4) Jamie xx feat Yasmin “Touch Me”
5) Jamie Woon “Shoulda (Oliver Schories Edit)”
6) Swarms feat Holly Prothman “I Gave You Everything”
7) Burial/Jamie Woon “Wayfaring Stranger (Burial Mix)”
8) UNKLE “Rabbit in Your Headlights”
9) Dirty Elegance “Old Friends”
10) Noel Gallagher “Let The Lord Shine a Light On Me (UNKLE Remix)”
11) UNKLE “When The Lights Go Out/We Own The Night”
12) Above & Beyond feat Richard Bedford “Sun & Moon (Distance Remix)”
13) Brandon Boyd “Here Comes Everyone”
14) Nero “Reaching Out”
15) Dodge & Fuski “Python”

Mix: Volmax’s I

Image: Judith Slaying Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi (c. 1612)

This was supposed to be my 19th mix, but the style and genres here have strayed so far away from my previous trance, proggy and techno mixes that I decided to start all over again with Volmax I.

I’ve been listening to some of these tracks on loop, so I decided to put it all together. Funnily, UNKLE, Jamie Woon, The xx and even Noel Gallagher was supposed to be included, but I had no space or fitting progression for it. I did have a go at it, and ended up with a 2-hour-too-long mix.

I’ll do another one for Volmax II that’ll proceed to a more guitar heavy vibe or perhaps hip hop, glitch, neo-classical, symphonic, orchestral… we’ll see where the wind will take us. At the meantime, download and thanks for listening in advance.

Tracklist:

1) Alex Clare “Damn Your Eyes (Etta James Cover)”
2) Stateless “Bloodstream”
3) Stateless “I’m On Fire (Blue Daisy Flammable Mix)”
4) Eskmo “Cloudlight”
5) EMIKA “Drop The Other”
6) The Naked and Famous “The Sun”
7) Sepalcure “Pencil Pimp”
8) SBTRKT feat. Sampha “Hold On”
9) Swarms “Flikr of ur Eyes”
10) James Blake “CMYK”
11) Lana Del Rey “Video Games (Jamie Woon Remix)”
12) Faithless “Crazy Bal Heads”
13) The Heavy “How You Like Me Now? (Joker Remix)”
14) Gorillaz feat. Daley “Doncamatic (Joker Remix)”
15) Delphic “This Momentary”
