Is vandalism breaking the law? Yes, I wouldn’t want anyone to just paint over my land. Is law needed? Yes, to protect and safeguard society against any criminal wrongdoings.
Law is meant to judged fairly, the criminality of ones’ action. And in this case, it is imperative to prove the intent of the doer.
Was her action driven by an intent to damage public property? Was it motivated by any political, religious or immoral stance? If these intents were true, what have she damaged and which political party, religious body or moral grounds have she violated?
If not, was it motivated by a social commentary that I would assume, anyone who is born, bred or have been in Singapore for an amount of time could relate to?
If so, in our relation to both stickers and graffiti, was it generally embraced as a relatable and an acceptable expression, and have resulted in minimal to no form of damage whatsoever?
From her background, is she a known criminal? Has she ever been arrested? Is she officially listed in any opposing political party, religious extremist group or have been clinically tagged as socially unstable?
With no intent to damage public property, no violation to any person or group, no previous criminal record, and in merit of her social expression that most have deemed as acceptable, the weight of her legal wrongdoing should be reduced to the bare minimum.
Vandalism is against the law, artistic expression is not. And in this case, the said expression is a nationalistic one which is unjust to be deemed as criminal.
If you say that this is only the voice of a minority, it is not. This is the most vocal section from the voice of the majority.
If the concern here is of using taxpayer’s money to clean up the act, as a taxpayer and citizen of this country, I would gladly do it for free.
