Top 10 Things to do This Week (Jan 16-22)

Suzanne Vega
Esplanade Recital Studio l $128/148 from Sistic
Jan 18, 7.30pm

The American singer-songwriter’s 1987 track “Tom’s Diner” is one of those tracks that has been remixed, covered and remade in just about every genre. British producers DNA started the ball rolling with their dance mix that opened the flood gates for Public Enemy, Nikki D and even REM to craft their own renditions. Playing in Singapore, Vega’s seasoned performance is built on 10 albums and a career spanning close to 3 decades.

Super 8 & Tab
Zouk l $25/32 includes two drinks
Jan 20, 10pm

Finnish proudest trance exports Miika “Super8” Eloranta and Janne “Tab” Mansnerus have been building their notoriety for producing some of the most melodically driving tracks that had them compared to Above & Beyond and pinning alongside current favourites Arnej, Tritonal and W&W for their similar musical flavour. Following their 2006’s smashers “Helsinki Scorchin’” and “Wont Sleep Tonight”, the duo blew the roof with their release of two astounding vocal tracks “My Enemy” and “Empire” in 2010. Heading to Singapore for only the second time, their set is promised to be filled with end-to-end euphoria and boundless energy.

ALTER feat. Marcel Woods
Avalon l $30 includes one drink
Jan 20, 10pm

With the Dutch DJ-producer’s 2005 anthem “Advanced” making its way as the track on 2006’s Trance Energy festival, he has since been on the roster of just about every major trance festivals. His latest artist/remix album Open All Hours is set to drop on Jan 27 featuring his distinctive tech-laced synths and riffs and his signature pile-driver of a break down-build up construct.

[PICK OF THE WEEK] Soul Clap
Velvet Underground – Dance l $25/32 includes two drinks
Jan 20, 10pm

Boston’s electronic funk duo Soul Clap should not be confused with an EP of the same name by hip hop duo Showbiz & A.G. Also Cnyce aka Chaz Shabaz should not be confused with Shabazz Palaces –a hip hop collective. Elyte aka E-Heavy The Bamboozla should not be confused with anyone though his and Cynce’s meeting was said to take place when: a Sun Ra light beam sent from Saturn collided with the P-Funk Mothership and sent them tumbling to earth (exact words). Fuck that, they are funkier than all that jazz.

Chroam & Sol Presents Lime
Piedra Negra l Free
Jan 20, 6pm

Chroam looks set to quench revellers’ thirst for afro, Latin and percussive rhythms at this monthly shindig. Held at the second floor of the Mexican restaurant Piedra Negra, the compound will be converted into an all-South and North American dance and urban vibe. If you’re lucky, the party might just spill into the streets.

Electric Playgrnd: Crystallised feat. Marcus with MC Boo
Zirca l $16-28 includes two drinks
Jan 20, 10pm

After more than 2 years as a resident at Zirca, the eclectic DJ Marcus helms the decks once again for a night of unadulterated mayhem –parental guidance unadvised. Dropping everything from techno to electro, break beats to dub, Marcus got it all sorted. Hype man MC Boo supports.

Klazz Brothers: Classic Meets Cuba
Esplanade Concert Hall l $35-85 from Sistic
Jan 21, 7.30pm

When German musicians Tobias and Kilian Forster of Klazz Brothers headed to Havanna, Cuba for their tour, little did they foresee that a magical collaboration was about to happen. Having met and jammed with the members of the Compay Segundo’s band, Klazz’s classic European musical traditions and Compay’s swing and Latin jazz married naturally. The birth of the new sound saw the release of the album Classic Meets Cuba in 2002 and transpired to Mozart Meets Cuba 2 years later.

Avaland feat. Mr. White
Avalon l $30 includes one drink
Jan 21, 10pm

Los Angeles DJ-producer Mr. White has been rocking floors with his blend of electro house concocted with doses of bugged-out basslines and heavy wobbles. Having remixed everything from Deadmau5 to Vandalism, and Nicole Scherzinger to even Atari Teenage Riot, Mr. White is considered as LA’s best kept secret.

I ♥ Dubstep feat. DeVille
Home Club l $15 includes one drink
Jan 21, 10pm

The head-honcho of British label Senseless Records, DeVille has been purveying the future sound of bass with his sublime cuts of grime and garage. Joining him will be the night’s resident and one to look out for, Jerls together with latest inclusion -the well-established Reiki. Local dubstep pioneer Darren Dubwise and Singapore’s very own bass legend Andy Vortex powers-up the night.
