Review: Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
Journey-2-The-Mysterious-Island-Wallpaper-1.jpg)
[inSing] “Who’s up for an adventure?” asked a beaming Alexander Anderson (played by Michael Caine who can still run at his age). That question heard in trailers - and asked about three more times throughout the film - set the premise to what is to be an action-packed journey through an island where the only mythical thing about it is that its ecological system is flipped—small animals are huge and vice versa. And as the credits rolled, we caught ourselves asking, “What adventure?” Honestly, without the ingenious idea of changing the ecological system, the film would have been over in 30 minutes.

Mix: Volmax’s III

Image: ST. KRYPTONIA by Hillary White
Indie super-band The Dead Weather opens for the hip-hop and R&B half of the eclectic Volmax III -following in the same vein as the last two mixes: never pigeon-holed. With current urban lyrical and production purveyors Shabazz Palaces, SBTRKT and Das Racist helming the front, the lesser-known Khat who has been compared to The Weeknd are both featured.
Nicholas Jarr remix of a Azari & III track takes us to the house portion of the mix while quickly introducing a gem of a remix from Sandy Rivera. The acapella of Pigeon John’s “The Bomb” threads through the electro mayhem from Hacker Boys and Mark Sherry’s latest while new remixes of Avicii and Justice and Cobra Starship peaks it up.
With the latter hinting elements of dubstep, the mix heads to its tail-end with wobbles and heavy bass hitters from the likes of Zeds Dead, Gemini, Sub Focus, Noisia and Joker. I’m a big fan of the vocal prowess of Alex Clare and he did a fantastic cover of Prince’s “When Doves Cry” which features. Zane Lowe’s alter-ego Whateverman closes the mix with his rework of a Snow Patrol favourite.
Download the mix and I wouldn’t worry if you start head-bobbing; that’s really the whole point. Thank you for listening.

Top 10 Things to do This Week (Jan 16-22)

Suzanne Vega
Esplanade Recital Studio l $128/148 from Sistic
Jan 18, 7.30pm
The American singer-songwriter’s 1987 track “Tom’s Diner” is one of those tracks that has been remixed, covered and remade in just about every genre. British producers DNA started the ball rolling with their dance mix that opened the flood gates for Public Enemy, Nikki D and even REM to craft their own renditions. Playing in Singapore, Vega’s seasoned performance is built on 10 albums and a career spanning close to 3 decades.
Mix: Volmax’s II

Image: The Farewell of Telemachus and Eucharis by Jacques-Louis David (c. 1818)
Here’s Volmax II which I wanted to release in February but grew too impatient. First on the mix is EMIKA -one of the most underrated artist if I ever heard one. The UK born-Berlin based singer/DJ/producer of Czech heritage is one of Ninja Tune’s most recent signing. A storyteller first, her distinctive creative knack can be found in her broody narrative further exposed by dark basslines and even darker undertones. I love her music very much.
Immediately after, Lana Del Rey (of course), Yasmin and an up-and-comer Holly Prothman fills the female vocal range. A couple of Jamie (S)Woons is followed by three UNKLE tracks that goes from the haunting to the rocking -thanks to Noel Gallagher. Brandon Boyd’s solo endeavour is also featured leading to some crazy dubstep wobbles from Nero and Dodge & Fuski.
Free to download, enjoy 54 minutes of 15 tracks including a monologue from the film Spun right at the end. Thanks for listening in advance.
Tracklist:
1) EMIKA “Double Edge”
2) Lana Del Rey “Blue Jeans (Count Ninjula Remix)”

5) Jamie Woon “Shoulda (Oliver Schories Edit)”
6) Swarms feat Holly Prothman “I Gave You Everything”
7) Burial/Jamie Woon “Wayfaring Stranger (Burial Mix)”
8) UNKLE “Rabbit in Your Headlights”
9) Dirty Elegance “Old Friends”
10) Noel Gallagher “Let The Lord Shine a Light On Me (UNKLE Remix)”
11) UNKLE “When The Lights Go Out/We Own The Night”
12) Above & Beyond feat Richard Bedford “Sun & Moon (Distance Remix)”
13) Brandon Boyd “Here Comes Everyone”

Review: I Spit On Your Grave

[inSing] Jennifer Hills (Sarah Butler - usually semi or fully naked) needs to get away from the bustling city life to write her novel and rents a riverside cabin. Unknown to her, the local hillbillies are plotting to shake her up for unintentionally humiliating one of them –Johnny (Jeff Branson), a gas station attendant. What was supposed to be a lesson taught ended up going too far with Jennifer being brutally gang-raped by two of Johnny’s friends, a mentally challenged plumber and a Sheriff. Jennifer survives the ordeal and dives into the lake, never to be seen again –or so they thought.
