Download: DāM-FunK’s “I Want A Girl / Some People”

Los Angeles’ “Ambassador of Boogie Funk,” has been hard at work since the mid 80s instigating all things boogie. The DJ, producer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist has garnered massive buzz from both traditional and alternative media for his funk production tweaked to modern sensibilities. His latest release comes in the form of two self-recorded songs on cassette made in the late 80s that has never been distributed, but now is free to download. “I Want A Girl / Some People” is a feel-good, funky piece formed with robotic synths and slapping basslines but rooted in the tradition that has made him who he is today.

Feiyue Custodian of Freedom
The Asian-based French sneaker brand, Feiyue recently made its round throughout Singapore personally delivering un paquet filled with French-inspired goodness. The kick ass people of GOODSTUPH led by a good friend of mine, Pat Law, painstakingly delivered these hand-assembled packages to their selection of 50 Custodian of Freedom.
Apparently I am in that category, purveying the idea of freedom, releasing doves in the air and doing a little freedom dance. I do believe that freedom is free, and coincidentally, those are the same words tattooed on my arm in French: la liberte est gratuite.
Here’s me, not being sure how to react to this fucking lovely package…

I finally managed to take the paquet home after being not so crazy busy at work. There’s an awesome mid-top Feiyue A.S sneaker, a hand-written letter, a bottle of Kronenbourg 1664, macaroons, cookies, croissants and even a map to a Feiyue store in Paris. I am not much of a shopper, the last (and only) pair of shoes I had was purchased 3 years ago; so this is really awesome. Anyway, the beer was the first thing I had, it’s gone now.

I found out that you can also nominate potential Custodian of Freedom on Feiyue’s Facebook page. I threw in a couple of names of people whom I felt have explored and expressed their creative freedom bravely till today. This includes Aarika Lee and Kevin Lester from Sixx, Kavan Spruyt from Midnight Shift, and Kiat from Syndicate. Nomination ends on Dec 31, so get-on-clicking now!
Drop by Zouk x Feiyue 20/20 Sneaker Launch on Nov 16, 10pm at Velvet Underground, Zouk as the French sneaker brand collaborates with the great dame in line towards the latter’s 20th anniversary celebration.
Big gratitude goes out to Feiyue and GOODSTUPH for this awesome paquet. See you guys at the party.

5 Must Hear Releases
The Void
Darkness Falls
hfn Music
Heard of Mew? Sure you have; they’re a Danish alternative rock band. Heard of Michael Learns to Rock? Who cares? Anyone who can tie their shoelace since the late 80s must have heard of them. There have yet to be a particular musical group to put Denmark on the world map of music other than the aforementioned. Vocalist-keyboardist Josephine Philip and guitarist-bassist Ina Lindgreen might be the two fresh faces to give that a go.
Under the guise of Darkness Falls, the upcoming electronic duo recently released their debut album Alive In Us –filled with 12 tracks worth of melancholy so poignant you can be caught staring out the window. Assisting them in the production department is Denmark’s most successful electronic dance music export, Trentemoller. Working with them on the album, one can safely expect the DJ-producer threading dark and broody pastures –and he does so without jeopardizing the pop wave that girls ride on.
“The Void” can be considered the best representation to the duo’s sound -an amalgamation of suspenseful synths, teething riffs, dreamy vocals and the occasional triangle twangs. Buy Alive In Us on Beatport.
